Partnerships

In Australia, BasicNeeds works in partnership with the Nossal Institute for Global Health and the Mental Health Association of Central Australia (MHACA), with which we undertake work that deploys the complementary skills of both organisations to achieve common objectives.

With the Nossal Institute, BasicNeeds has developed research projects that support better access to services in India and has provided support to the placement and supervision of students. With MHACA, we have developed approaches to remote area mental health care for Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory and maintain an interest in improved methods for service evaluation.

Research

BasicNeeds also works closely with the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (ACPACS) of the University of Queensland, with whom we have developed a research project on conflict and mental health in conjunction with BasicNeeds Sri Lanka.

 Service development

The challenges of community mental health and development in the harsh environment and challenging isolation of many parts of the vast land area of Australia are a topic of particular interest to many organisations. BasicNeeds is working with General Practice Network NT (GPNNT) to help develop its services to Aboriginal communities in the Top End of the Northern Territory. The service model of GPNNT is progressive in employing local Aboriginal people as workers in remote communities to provide direct support for people affected by mental health problems.

In Australia, we are interested to hear from organisations that have common ground and interests. BasicNeeds is keen to work with others in building knowledge, awareness and capacity for improved community mental health services and to locate mental health within a development framework.
