BasicNeeds Publications
Documents published by BasicNeeds are:
1 - Baseline studies
A baseline study is a review of the situation of the programme area specifically looking at the lives of people with mental disorders and all of those factors in the external environment that affect them. Normally undertaken at the start of a programme in a specified geographic area, the baseline study helps to shape subsequent development on the ground. Furthermore, the study provides benchmarks for future programme evaluations. Baseline studies are often a mandatory requirement of donors such as DFID and are conducted by BasicNeeds with their partners.
2 - Outcome Evaluative Studies
The purpose of Outcome evaluative studies is to evidence how effective the interventions of the BasicNeeds Mental Health & Development Model is in bringing about real change in the lives of people with mental disorders. In order to do this, these studies use representative samples to investigate specific outcomes around topics such as integration, treatment and economic sustainability.
3 - Research Studies
Research is embedded in the model for mental health and development and occurs throughout a programme’s implementation. Everyone (the people with mental illness, the field staff and the managers) participates in research throughout the programme. Research studies are done both at individual programmes / countries on specific issues or at a larger (international) level based on certain common emerging issues/ themes. The purpose of research in BasicNeeds is to produce evidence and use it to influence and bring about change in policy, as evidence for a programmes efficacy, and to build a knowledge base.
4 - Impact Reports
BasicNeeds’ Annual Impact Reports provide a detailed analysis of BasicNeeds impact worldwide. Developing this report is a team effort and involves many stages of work. A first level of analysis of change and impact for any year is done by Country Programme Managers using a common set of indicators developed by the Policy and Practice Directorate. This analysis is presented in country level impact reports. Multi-layered Data Base Management System (DBMS) stores information about every user of BasicNeeds’ programmes and this is consolidated every three months in a pre-formatted Statistical Tracking Sheet (STS). The country impact reports and the statistical information are important sources of information for this document. Additionally annual research reports, evaluation reports and life stories are referred to. All of this information is then consolidated, reviewed and further analysed by the Policy and Practice Directorate team to produce BasicNeeds’ Annual Impact Reports.
5 - Manuals
BasicNeeds produces manuals and training materials for an in-depth exploration of topics and training emerging from our field practice.
6 - Books
7 - Newsletters
By integrating research into everything we do, we aim to bridge the gaps which exist between mental health policy, practice and ground realities. BasicNeeds’ International Research Management Team, through these Newsletters, provides an overview of all the research work carried out by BasicNeeds.
