International Policy

What is policy?

BasicNeeds defines policy work as all activities targeting change in government practice. In many cases, policy work is done in the absence of formal policy documents, through ground-level negotiation and collaboration with district level authorities. Policy work starts on the ground and works upwards from community to district, national and international levels. Only some of our policy work targets governmental agencies. Other targets of our work are other non-governmental organisations in our field, donor agencies and influential individuals.

What are our policy goals?

The goals of BasicNeeds’ policy work are set forth in two of the four goals contained in the Strategic Framework 2009-2013: ·

  • To influence key decision makers to scale up services for mental health and development, using evidence generated from our programmes.
  • To support people with mental illness or epilepsy to advocate for their own rights.

Policy Briefs

Policy briefs are quarterly communications that succinctly highlight the ways in which BasicNeeds have been making progress towards our policy goals. To subscribe to the policy briefs or comment on their content, please contact: victoria.demenil@basicneeds.org.
