The Problem
Mental illness in developing countries has been ignored for too long.
Mental illnesses make up a large proportion of illnesses and they cost a lot in terms of lack of productivity and care, yet there is hardly any money spent on treating mentally ill people. In many cases, there is only one psychiatrist for every one million people in a country. Often the situation is much worse.
As well as this, mentally ill people face many particular social problems due to their illness, especially if they are poor. This can lead to them being excluded from their communities and families, sometimes even their homes too.
The problems that mentally ill people face are great and to continue to ignore them is simply not acceptable.
